The pagers that exploded in Lebanon were apparently not made in Taiwan after all; they simply bore the logo of the company Gold Apollo. Apparently, the prepared devices were produced by an authorized partner in Hungary.
When asked by the German Press Agency by telephone, Gold Apollo explained that a Hungarian-based company had designed and manufactured the radios. “According to an agreement, we give BAC permission to use our trademark to sell products in certain regions, but the design and production will be handled entirely by BAC,” Gold Apollo said. The AR-924 model mentioned in the media reports is also manufactured and sold by BAC.
According to US media reports, the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia had ordered a total of 3,000 radio receivers from Gold Apollo. According to the Wall Street Journal, many of the beepers that went off were from a shipment that arrived just a few days ago. According to the New York Times, the shipment was intercepted earlier by Israeli intelligence and prepared with about 25 to 50 grams of explosives each.
Lebanese politician: “Israel’s war crimes”
Simultaneous explosions of hundreds of beepers in Lebanon on Tuesday wounded some 2,750 people, killing nine. Many of the injured were Hezbollah fighters, including members of the elite Radwan force. Hezbollah blamed Israel and vowed retaliation. Lebanese parliamentary leader Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah ally, called it a “massacre and a war crime by Israel.”
The attack is intended to disrupt Hezbollah
According to information from the American news portal Axios, the explosions also paralyzed a significant part of Hezbollah’s military command and control system. The Israeli-carried out attack was aimed at disrupting the powerful militia and creating a sense within its ranks that it had been fully penetrated by Israeli intelligence, Axios reported, citing an unidentified source. Israel has not yet responded to the explosions.
