A man has been killed in clashes between residents and migrants in the Tunisian coastal town of Sfax. According to eyewitnesses, he was stabbed at night.
MP Tarek Mahdi said in a video message near the crime scene that he saw the attack himself. A group of migrants then fled. According to eyewitnesses, those involved threw stones on both sides, which also damaged cars. The prosecutor’s office has now ordered the arrest of three “irregular migrants”.
There have been skirmishes in Sfax since Sunday. 34 people have been arrested, state agency TAP reports. A video circulating on social media is said to show how a refugee reception center was set on fire.
Violence against migrants is on the rise
Tunisia and Libya are the main transit points for migrants in North Africa on their way to Europe. Tunisian President Kais Saied has already announced tougher measures (see video above). This was followed by a wave of violence and intimidation against migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa. According to observers, this situation and the economic crisis mean that more and more people dare to make the crossing to Europe. At least 2,400 people died last year.
