The Merapi volcano on the Indonesian island of Java erupted again on Sunday. The released ash is said to have covered several villages and no deaths were reported.
The Indonesian Geological Disaster Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) said the eruption started around 2:14 pm local time. The eruption released hot ash and a mixture of rock and lava. Ash covered several villages and there were no deaths.
The second highest alert level has been in effect since 2020
The Merapi volcano is located about 35 kilometers north of the city of Yogyakarta on the island of Java. A serious eruption in 2010 killed more than 340 people and displaced tens of thousands. Due to increasing activity, the volcano has been at the second highest alert level since November 2020.
Nearly 130 active volcanoes in the country
There are almost 130 active volcanoes throughout Indonesia. The island nation is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for seismic tremors.
