Far-right French uses the murder of Lola, the girl in the trunk, for political purposes

They accuse the government of being responsible for the crime of “laxism” in immigration cases, as the prime suspect is an undocumented Algerian immigrant.

The French far right is using the murder of Lola, the 12-year-old girl, whose body was found in a suitcase in Paris a week ago, for political purposes. The prime suspect, Dahbia B., is an undocumented Algerian immigrant. This has sparked outrage from the far right, which denounces the French government’s “laxism” on immigration and believes the executive branch is partly responsible for this crime.

Dahbia, a 24-year-old woman with obvious mental health problems, legally entered France in 2016 on a student visa, but that had expired. Last August, after being checked at an airport and checking that her papers were not in order, she was ordered to leave the Gallic territory within 30 days, but she did not.

Far-right Éric Zemmour, founder of the Reconquest party, has described Lola’s murder as “francocide”, implying that the minor was murdered because she was French. Zemmour and his supporters took part in a rally organized by a far-right think tank in Paris this Thursday, where there were no political speeches. “Laxism kills,” read a banner unfolded in Denfert-Rochereau Square.

Marine Le Pen and other National Regrouping deputies simultaneously held a minute of silence before the National Assembly in memory of the teen. “A minute of silence is never a political recovery, it’s a tribute,” Le Pen defended himself against criticism.

The murder of Lola has shocked France. Her parents warned the police about her disappearance on Friday when they saw that their daughter had not returned home after school. A homeless man discovered Lola’s body in a trunk last Friday night. According to the autopsy, the teenager, who was bound hand and foot, raped and tortured, died of suffocation. She will be buried Monday in Lillers, a town in northern France, where her family comes from.

Dahbia, 24, was arrested outside Paris on Saturday. She was identified thanks to the security cameras of the building where Lola and her family and the sister of the alleged killer lived. The woman appeared in the images with the girl before her disappearance. Witnesses also saw her drag the suitcase where they found the teen’s body.

The prime suspect was charged Monday by an investigating judge for the crimes of “murdering a minor under the age of 15”, “rape committed with torture and barbarity” and “hiding a corpse”. She is currently incarcerated and will undergo psychiatric evaluation.
