In the future, pandemics could be caused not only by animals, but also by ice, according to Canadian researchers. The research suggests that as global temperatures rise due to climate change, viruses and bacteria trapped in glaciers and permafrost become more likely to re-emerge and infect local fauna as their range also shifts closer to the poles.
In 2016 there was already one case: in Siberia, permafrost thawed during a heat wave and anthrax bacteria were released. A boy became infected by a reindeer carcass and died. Another seven people became ill.
Genetic analyzes of bottom and lake sediments from Lake Hazen in Canada, the world’s largest high-altitude freshwater Arctic lake, also confirm the increased virus risk.
15,000 year old viruses
Chinese researchers also took ice samples and discovered genetic material from 33 viruses. Based on their location, the particles are estimated to be about 15,000 years old.
