A car accident in New York state took the life of a 13-year-old boy – but before that, the teenager saved his sister of the same age. He yanked her away so the oncoming SUV wouldn’t hit her head on. While the girl survived injured, all help came too late for Tyler Phillips. “He was a hero, he will always be a hero,” Tyler’s mother said after the tragedy.
The two children were on their way home from playing in a park in Coram when an SUV hit them around 7:30 PM. The girl Krystal was right in the “line of fire” of the car – without hesitation Tyler got in to save his sister. “The car hit her first. I think he jumped and tried to snatch her away – he just got caught,” said a family friend.
Bub was thrown off the sidewalk into the street
An eyewitness saw Tyler being thrown off the sidewalk into the street and alerted emergency services. But the emergency services could do nothing more for the teenager – a broken neck was eventually found in the hospital. Even after his death, the boy saved even more lives: his organs were donated.
Police looking for fugitive SUV driver
Krystal was only injured in the arm and had to carry it in a sling. However, there is no trace of the driver of the accident – he simply drove away after the crash. According to Krystal, it should have been a gray SUV. “We believe the vehicle involved has front and/or side damage,” said Suffolk County Deputy Superintendent David Doherty. “We are currently in the area looking for witnesses and video.”
