More than 100 operations, a large-scale power failure, lightning strikes, fallen trees and flooded cellars – Sunday night was a challenge for the fire brigades in Upper Austria.
Lightning and thunder and eventually rain resulted in more than 100 calls from the local fire department as of 9:45 p.m. The districts of Wels-Land, Linz-Land, Perg and the city of Wels were particularly affected. Several thunderstorms swept through the regions throughout the night, forcing emergency services to their limits.
Multiple households without power
At around 11:11 p.m., the Pregarten, Pregartsdorf and Selker-Neustadt fire brigades were alerted to a farm fire. After a lightning strike, a wooden shed behind a farm caught fire. There were large-scale power cuts in the city of Wels, Wels-Land and in some regions in Linz-Land and Steyr-Land.
People trapped in elevators
In the city of Wels alone, the fire brigade had to be called 40 times. The main reason: 20 people also had to be rescued from elevators that had broken down due to the power failure.
