Battle for cool water – climate change: drinking water will be a rare commodity in the future

Date:

Due to the current drought and the low groundwater level, experts warn of an imminent water shortage. Private households in this country could soon compete with industry and agriculture. The water suppliers therefore demand seamless monitoring of the taps to protect our precious water for future generations.

On the occasion of today’s Drinking Water Day, Wolfgang Nöstlinger, Vice-President of the Gas and Water Industry Association, calls for the supply of drinking water to private households – in times of water shortages – to be given priority over water abstraction by industry and agriculture. Because even though there has been a lot of rain in recent days, this is not enough to solve the problem of the falling groundwater level in the country in the long term.

Gloomy Predictions
It is true that Austria is a country with a lot of water, where the demand for free groundwater abstraction points has so far been amply met, but the current development does not allow for wild growth, it is said.

“We don’t know how much water is used by industry and agriculture and when. Because not all groundwater abstractions are measured. But that should change in the future. We need to look at the consumption of our precious commodity. We therefore require that all water withdrawal amounts are recorded in a verifiable manner,” concludes Nöstlinger.
