After the sighting of two Russian warships off the east coast of Taiwan, the Taipei government itself sent ships and planes to observe. In addition, the missile systems on the coast have been activated.
Taiwan registers Chinese ships near its waters on an almost daily basis. Beijing regards democratic and self-governing Taiwan as a breakaway region that wants to reunite with the mainland – if necessary by military force. However, the presence of Russian warships is unusual.
Russia’s state news agency Interfax reported on Tuesday that Russia’s “detachment of Pacific Fleet warships had reached the Philippine Sea after crossing the South China Sea”. The warships performed tasks as part of a long-range sea crossing, including “a simulation of a naval battle to repel a missile strike from a simulated enemy at sea,” Interfax reported.
Taiwan supports sanctions against Russia
