On Saturday evening, the vacant Bräugasthof Fürberg in the city of Salzburg burned down. Around 3 a.m., a passerby noticed smoke and fire in the attic of the former inn. Great alarm was raised in the city.
The watchful eye of a passerby prevented a catastrophe on Saturday evening. In the densely built-up and narrow residential area of Salzburg-Parsch, a fire raged in the attic of Gasthof Fürberg. In the former inn, which had been empty for years, flames were already shooting from the roof when the emergency services arrived.
A large contingent of professional fire brigades, volunteer fire brigades and the Red Cross arrived to extinguish the fire at the former inn. “We rescued four people from the smoke-filled room and handed them over to the rescue service with suspected smoke poisoning,” says Stefan Jakolitsch from the Salzburg city fire brigade.
The people were sleeping and did not notice the fire. “That could have ended badly.” Those rescued are said to be homeless people who had sought shelter in the former inn and furnished it accordingly.

According to the fire brigade, approximately 40 square meters of roof structure was affected by the fire. The emergency services quickly brought the fire under control by fighting it from the outside and inside. The fire was turned off around 7:30 am.
Fire investigators searched for the cause of the fire in the powerless building on Saturday morning. After police complete their investigation, the area affected by the fire will be cleared with a crane to contain any hidden embers. Eberhard-Fugger-Straße was closed during the fire-fighting work.
