This time, instead of a Fiacre, we take a tank howitzer on a tour of Austria’s most famous boulevard (see video above): on Wednesday’s National Day, a number of devices took up position on Heldenplatz, just like in the old days the army offers this year all it can for its performance show Has. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) personally welcomed the arriving soldiers.
The national holiday on Wednesday traditionally starts with the laying of a wreath by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and the federal government. Afterwards there is a grand swearing in at Heldenplatz and a viaduct with two Eurofighters and a C-130 Hercules.
After two Corona years with restrictions, another 1000 recruits are sworn in. At the end, paratroopers land on Heroes’ Square.
The armed forces are also discussed in two other places: Disaster relief and ABC units are presented at the court, the foreign missions and in the Burgtheater. In addition, the Safety Festival of the City of Vienna takes place on the Rathausplatz.
