Sergei Khajikurbanov, convicted as an accomplice in the murder of Kremlin-critical journalist Anna Politkovskaya, has been released from the Russian penal colony to fight his way out of Ukraine. He would have been promoted to the front in no time.
Khajikurbanov would actually spend twenty years in a Russian prison and would not be released until 2034. But things turned out differently. As the Telegram channel ‘Baza’ has now learned, the man is said to have left prison at the end of 2022 to go fight in Ukraine.
In Ukraine, the former prisoner was initially appointed commander of the intelligence department. He “went behind enemy lines several times and carried out tasks with his fighters that were specific to intelligence officers,” a source told Baza.
Sergei Khadzhikurbanov can be seen in the photo:
“Must really be Rambo”
Khadzhikurbanov quickly rose to battalion commander. “If a prisoner can rise from troop commander to battalion commander in a few months, he must really be a Rambo,” another source told the Telegram channel, comparing the man to the war hero and elite fighter from the American action film series.
As a rule, Russian prisoners must complete six months of military service to be pardoned. Khajikurbanov’s prison sentence has already been lifted. He then allegedly voluntarily extended his contract with the Russian armed forces, as ‘Baza’ further states.
Murder of Anna Politkowskaya
Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya was killed by multiple gunshots outside her apartment on October 7, 2006. She was considered an opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin and had reported on human rights abuses by Russian and Chechen security forces, mainly from Chechnya, for the Kremlin-critical newspaper Novaya Gazeta.
The bloody act caused horror around the world. Human rights activists and relatives said those convicted in connection with the killing were merely following orders. Until the masterminds are caught and convicted, justice will not be served. Civil rights activists say the trail of those behind the attack could lead to government circles.
