A 70-year-old from the Carinthian district of Wolfsberg fell victim to internet crypto fraudsters and lost 30,000 euros. Last week, when he wanted to make an alleged trading profit, he gave the perpetrators access to his laptop and mobile phone. When he checked whether the profit was already in the account, he found that three times 10,000 euros had been debited, according to the police.
In early 2022, the Carinthian came across an online advertisement for investments in crypto trading. After contacting previously unknown people, he made a transfer of a few hundred euros. Ever since the unknown perpetrators asked him to transfer more amounts, first daily and then weekly, he started ignoring the calls.
Remote maintenance utility installed on laptop and mobile phone
Last Friday he suddenly received another phone call: he could now have his profit of more than 1000 euros paid out. The caller will be happy to help you, all he has to do is install remote maintenance software on both his mobile phone and his laptop.
Since this sounded like normal procedure for the dupe, the 70-year-old followed the instructions. Finally, he had to make a small test transfer and came up with his access data in his e-banking app. Moments later, three direct debits were made. Investigations are underway, according to police.
