“Success unclear” – Anarchists continue to sabotage the rail network in Belarus

Date:

Anarchists want to continue sabotage on Belarus’ train network. How successful these have been so far is unclear, said representatives of the Eastern European Combat Organization of Anarcho-Communists (BOAK). The goal is to prevent the Russian army from resupplying its troops in Ukraine.

“The Belarusian government is covering up its failure. But we see that the Russian invasion had a lot of problems – and we hope that at least a small part of it is due to our actions,” the group wrote in an APA interview. On Monday, the BOAK blew up rails near the Russian city of Bryansk. in the border triangle Belarus, Russia and Ukraine.

In early July, the group conducted a sabotage operation near the Russian city of Kirschatsch. “First we found our destination using wikimapia and made sure the tracks led to a military object. We chose a rail bend so that the train crew would not see the damage to the rails from afar (…)”, BOAK wrote. 34 rail nuts and four rail connection nuts were loosened. The group then lifted the rails at the intersection and placed them on the splice plate to prevent them from moving backwards.

Destroyed electrical boxes and false alarms
In addition, it was considered to block an electrical signal that would have made the sabotage noticeable. Other “less noisy methods” include destroying junction boxes and joining two busbars. “(…) This creates a false alarm that the railway is closed, causing delays (…),” the militant group wrote.

As for their motive, members said they couldn’t just look away “how people suffer and die in this war.” Secret acts of sabotage are currently safer in Belarus than open protest. Police and military patrols, however, have had minor successes.

The Russian army uses the rail network in Belarus to transport goods for its troops to Ukraine.
