A 46-year-old Italian man stabbed several people in a supermarket in a large shopping center in Assago near Milan, injuring at least five people. One person, a cashier at a supermarket, was seriously injured, police said. A football professional is also among the victims.
Among those attacked was Spanish professional footballer Pablo Marí of Italian first division team AC Monza. An 80-year-old retiree and two elderly women were also injured. The most serious case is a 30-year-old man who was hospitalized in Rozzano near Milan with cardiac arrest and stab wounds to his chest and abdomen.
No terrorist attack
According to the initial findings, researchers ruled out a terrorist background for the perpetrator, who was being treated for depression and mental disorders. Passers-by overpowered the man afterwards in a supermarket. He was then arrested by the Carabinieri.
Footballer out of danger
The 29-year-old defender Marí is in first condition in a hospital in Milan, but is not in life-threatening condition. Monza CEO Adriano Galliani visited the injured footballer, who has been under contract with the Lombard football club since the start of the season, in hospital. Monza Calcio is owned by four-time Prime Minister and Forza Italia boss Silvio Berlusconi.
