The British secret service assumes that Russia is now supplying some units west of the Dnipro River in the Kherson region with newly deployed soldiers. The troops stationed there therefore have “extremely little manpower”. The British Ministry of Defense announced on Friday that Russian officers reported in September that the companies in the Kherson sector consisted of only six to eight people.
A company usually consists of about 100 soldiers – depending on the armament, the number of personnel varies. The troops on the right bank of the Dnipro are supposed to be with recently mobilized reservists are reinforced. They therefore have little combat experience – the next problem for the Russian armed forces, according to British intelligence.
Accordingly, the severely undermanned and poorly trained units in Ukraine are currently only capable of defensive operations. As a result, Russian ground forces have adopted a prolonged defensive stance on most front lines over the past six weeks. Only in Donetsk the attacks continue.
Russia plays for time
All in all, Russia is apparently running ahead of time, as the clock is ticking for Ukrainian troops to retake in the face of deteriorating weather. Mud and cold can quickly affect mobility.
But even if the Russian armed forces succeed in consolidating their defenses over the long term, their operational concept will remain fragile, the British Ministry of Defense said. So to regain the initiative, Russia would have to deploy higher-quality mobile troops capable of countering Ukrainian breakthroughs and launching large-scale offensives of its own.
Kadyrov has to admit heavy losses
The troops loyal to Moscow have already suffered heavy losses during their invasion of Ukraine, with Chechen ruler Ramzan Kadyrov now admitting that he has lost many people in his unit. “23 fighters died and 58 were injured,” Kadyrov wrote on his Telegram channel on Friday evening. Earlier, Ukraine reported that it had met the Kadyrov unit after they disclosed their location on social media. The Chechen leader immediately used his confession to call on his compatriots to mobilize for the war in Ukraine.
