Border controls to Slovakia are being expanded, as the Interior Ministry explained to the “Krone” on Friday. With this step, Austria is following the neighboring country of the Czech Republic – checks on Slovakia are also continued there.
The Austrian controls are also to be extended for 15 days “initially in agreement with the Czech Republic”, and a further 30-day extension is in the pipeline. The checks are carried out in close cooperation with the Czech and Slovak Ministries of the Interior.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) explained in a statement to Krone: “Border controls to Slovakia are still necessary because otherwise the criminal traffickers would react immediately and change their routes.”
According to the ministry, the police have arrested 12 people smugglers during border controls with Slovakia, which have been ongoing since the end of September. This year there are already more than 500 throughout Austria.
