French opposition announces new motions of censure against government

Date:

La Francia Insumisa and Regroupamiento Nacional present new initiatives to try to overthrow the executive over its refusal to negotiate budgets

La France Insumisa, the party of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and National Regroupment, the far-right party Marine Le Pen, have filed two new motions of censure against the French government, after Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne resorted to the article on Wednesday 49.3 of the Constitution . to quickly approve the Social Security budget. This is the third time in a week that Borne has used this constitutional mechanism to approve the budgets without submitting the text to the delegates for a vote.

The French government, which does not have an absolute majority in the National Assembly, has already passed three other motions of censure this week, two tabled by Nupes (the alliance of left-wing parties) and one by the far right. The executive is expected to once again easily overcome the two new initiatives of La Francia Insumisa and Le Pen’s party next Monday, as the opposition is divided.

Every time the French government resorts to Article 49.3, La Francia Insumisa (the equivalent of Podemos in France) plans to systematically file a motion of censure to try to overthrow the government.

On the previous two occasions, the Mélenchon formation did so along with the rest of the Nupes parties, the left-wing alliance that also groups the socialists, the communists and the environmentalists. But this time he did it alone. The other left-wing parties have not confirmed the text because they “don’t want to trivialize motions of censure”, as communist deputy Pierre Dharréville explained.

To general surprise, Le Pen’s party voted in favor of Nupes’ first censure motion last Monday. Until hours before they said they wouldn’t. This unexpected support caused dissension among Nupes members, distorted by the voices of the far right.

French President Emmanuel Macron criticized “the cynicism” of the left in a televised interview last Wednesday, accusing him of going “hand in hand” with the far right to try to topple the government.

Filing a motion of censure is the opposition’s way of expressing its disapproval of the government. To be passed, 289 votes are needed from the 577 deputies in the National Assembly.
