Mass panic broke out in the South Korean capital of Seoul on Saturday night during a Halloween party (see also Twitter video above). Countless people were injured and pictures circulated on the internet of rescuers performing CPR on people in the street. So far there have been two fatalities.
According to media reports, the local fire service estimated that about 100 people were injured. Many of them went into cardiac arrest. The rescue received more than 80 emergency calls from people suffering from shortness of breath.
According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, a large crowd had previously moved slowly through a narrow street in the Itaewon district, an entertainment district, which is also confirmed by video recordings. In the course of this, panic broke out and people were “pressed together”.
President Yoon Suk-yeol ordered more emergency services to be sent to the region and hospital beds ready. Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, who is currently visiting Europe, is said to have announced his immediate return, according to Yonhap.
