“Bua Noi” is the only gorilla in Thailand. Animal rights activists around the world are fighting for the freedom of monkeys.
For 33 years, the gorilla lady “Bua Noi” – which means small lotus – has lived on the roof of a shopping mall in Bangkok. “Hell Zoo” is what animal rights activists call the tourist attraction. Read reviews: “Please avoid this place!”
The monkey looks at the visitors with empty eyes. Organizations have been trying to free the lone monkey for years – without success. Pop icon Cher also fought for “Bua Noi”. A petition with 117,000 signatures was not enough for the zoo to reconsider. “A life of boredom and loneliness is the cruelest fate of all for our great cousins,” animal rights activists said.
There was some hope for the release of the gorilla lady: the zoo wants to sell the animal for the equivalent of 780,000 euros. An amount that almost no charity organization can afford.
Thailand’s Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-archa sees no need for action at the moment: “The zoo has promised to care for the gorilla until the last day. And as the owner, he has the right to do that.”
