The deadliest stampede of the past ten years

The stampede that, according to the latest figures, left about 150 dead in Seoul early Sunday at a Halloween party in the South Korean capital, is one of the deadliest in the past decade.

On September 24, 2015, a massive stampede near Mecca killed 2,300 during the inaugural pilgrimage, the deadliest catastrophe in the history of the Hajj.

Pilgrims explained that the stampede was caused by the closure of a road and the mismanagement of the flow of worshipers by the security forces. Iran, which lost 464 of its faithful, criticized Saudi Arabia for failing to organize the event.

At the end of Saturday, October 29, 2022, a stampede during Halloween celebrations that had gathered thousands of people in the narrow streets of a neighborhood in the South Korean capital killed at least 146 people and injured 150.

On October 1, 2022, Indonesian police tried to contain a crowd of football fans with tear gas, sparking a stampede at a stadium in Malang, eastern Java island. At least 133 people were killed, including more than 40 children.

Many victims were trampled or suffocated trying to reach closed or too narrow doors to leave the site.

Six people, including three police officers, were charged and the region’s chief of police was transferred to another destination.

On October 13, 2013, a human avalanche during a religious festival in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh (center) left at least 115 dead, crushed or drowned and more than 110 injured.

At the time of the incident, some 20,000 people were on a bridge over the Sindh River. According to local authorities, a rumor about the possible collapse of the bridge hit by a tractor sparked a panic movement.

On January 1, 2013, at least 60 people – including many young people – were killed in a stampede by a huge crowd that had just attended the Saint Sylvester fireworks display in Abidjan.

On January 7, 2020, a stampede in Kerman (southeast) killed 56 people during the funeral of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, which was attended by a huge crowd.

Soleimani, who was killed in a US drone strike outside Baghdad airport on Jan. 3, was considered a hero in his fight against jihadists in Iraq and Syria.

On October 2, 2016, authorities said – more than 100 according to the opposition – died in a human avalanche in Bishoftu (50 km south-east of Addis Ababa), after clashes with police during the traditional Oromo Irreecha festival, marking the end of the rainy season.

On March 21, 2021, 45 people died during a stampede at the stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s economic capital, where a tribute to the late President John Magufuli was held.

On April 30, 2021, a stampede during the Jewish holiday Lag Baomer pilgrimage on Mount Meron in northern Israel killed at least 45 people.
