He calls on the majority of the pro-European center to “not only focus on the capitals and reach all corners”
– What do you think of the far right ruling Italy?
– Italy is a founding member and has historically been very pro-European. I call on former, interim and current leaders to keep Italy at the heart of Europe.
– Are you afraid I won’t?
– I am encouraged by the fact that there are staunch pro-Europeans and Atlanticists in relevant portfolios. We are at the beginning of the new government’s journey, but there are optimistic signs.
– Are you concerned about the rise of the far right on the continent? It’s happened in Italy, but it’s also strong in France, Sweden, Hungary, Poland, Germany…
– In recent years we have seen a voter fatigue manifesting itself in the extremes, right and left. As a result, your country is run by someone you don’t feel represented by.
– What is the solution?
– The responsibility rests on my shoulders and my colleagues. There is a political majority in the European Parliament and in the national chambers that is centrist and pro-European. That majority is the one that needs to re-inspire, engage with young people and also make sure we don’t just focus on capitals and institutions, but reach every corner of the country.
– Europe is going through a period of instability: Italy, the United Kingdom, motions of censure in France…
– I would rather there was stability. But every country has its own reality, which is democracy. We live in a time when we need to look beyond the day-to-day business and ensure that politicians seize the opportunity, with commitment and realism.
