Assets are gone – senior handed over 80,000 euros to wrong police officer

Date:

Police in Upper Austria warn again about fake police scams. The incident concerns an 80-year-old pensioner from the Mühlviertel, who had handed over valuables worth 80,000 euros to an unknown person in order to bring them to safety from possible burglars.

The elderly lady was called on Friday. A man pretended to be a police officer and told her that there were frequent burglaries in the area and that her property could also be in danger. In the end, the retiree agreed that her money and valuables would be “put to safety.” She handed over 80,000 euros in assets to a collector.

End the call immediately
The detectives therefore warned again on Monday: you should not let yourself be pressured by such calls, end the conversation quickly and then report immediately. Under no circumstances give money or valuables to strangers. In addition, the management asks younger people to make older relatives aware of the subject. “Any request for money on the phone is most likely a scam,” police said.
