Criminals are currently hanging out at various cemeteries in Burgenland. However, the brutal thefts are not noticed until late. It is possible that about 30 crosses have already been damaged or stolen.
For many relatives there was an unpleasant surprise these days when they came to the cemetery in Pinkafeld to prepare the graves of the deceased for All Saints’ Day. At at least 17 rest areas, their crotches were forcibly torn from their berths and taken away.
Stolen expensive jewelry
As reported, the first cases became known in mid-October after strangers hit the resting place on the night of October 12-13. The perpetrators were mainly looking for expensive crucifixes. The family grave of the third president of the National Council, Norbert Hofer (FPÖ), was also hit.
Because there is more activity in the cemetery shortly before All Saints’ Day, other victims have now also made a report. In one case, a 1.2m high gold alloy cross was stolen.
High damage
The damage is 5000 euros. At other resting places, the perpetrators took a copper tree of life and a copper cross. For the next of kin, this is particularly bitter shortly before the commemoration of the dead. The repair can take weeks.
Perpetrators also in Styria
Pinkafeld is not the only community affected, criminals are also raging in cemeteries in Oberwart and Pinggau in Styria.
In total, about 30 crosses may have been stolen or damaged. The damage is in the tens of thousands of euros. The police asks those affected to contact the Oberwart district service: 059133/1240
