Clarification after 5 years – Tourist in Greece killed by sheepdogs

Date:

Greek justice has ruled on an incident in which a British tourist was the victim of an alleged attack by wolves or dogs more than five years ago. The then 62-year-old woman was attacked and killed by sheepdogs, not wolves, while trekking in northeastern Greece. This was confirmed on Monday by the responsible coroner Nikolaos Kifnidis.

The owner of the dogs, a shepherd from the region, was initially sentenced to three years in prison. The man has appealed. The laboratory searched for DNA traces of the animals, according to Kifnidis. Experts from animal protection organizations also took part in the study. “All the investigations – including the DNA tests – have shown that it was not wolves that attacked the woman,” said Spyros Psaroudas, head of the animal welfare organization Kallistó.

Relatives called during attack
According to police, the victim – an aid refugee – was walking near the ancient city of Maroneia on Sept. 21, 2017 and was initially reported missing – krone.at reported. The British woman is said to have informed her relatives in England while the animals were attacking, who then alerted authorities in Greece. However, she could only be found dead.

Bones were discovered at the time, large body parts were missing. An expert examined the bites and initially concluded that they were wolves. This was later questioned and wild dogs were believed to have mauled the woman. Only now did the investigations bring definitive certainty.
