Julia Gruber, living in Treffen, is left with nothing. And she’s not alone. The storms in Carinthia leave a trail of devastation…
Wilhelm Gassler (86), former mayor of Treffen, lives next to the Meierei Bachl: “Since I was alive, the Bachl has never overflowed its banks!” Small, calm waters turned into severe flooding Wednesday night. Julia Gruber tells in tears what happened: “I wanted to go to the toilet at 1:30 am. And then the Mur came!” The windows broke, water and mud made their way through the family home in Treffen.
Daughter (12) taken to safety
“I woke up my 12-year-old daughter and fled with her and her grandparents to a caravan!” She describes the situation. A tree fell on the house, the ground floor is flooded and covered in mud. “No pictures in this world can show the devastation here!” the woman sobbed during the conversation with “Krone”. The bodies of water stopped for nothing and nobody: “My husband’s tractor washed up in a field about 500 meters away. It’s all broken!”
“We immediately notified the emergency services, but no one has managed to get here yet! We have no water, no electricity! I don’t know what to do!” Julia Gruber had just set up a nail salon in her house: “I have nothing left. Everything my family and I built is gone!” And that’s just one of the many tragic stories and fortunes for which the storm is responsible.
