The traditional Chinese brewery Tsingtao is confronted with a hygiene scandal. Footage has emerged on social media of a previously unknown worker (see video above) urinating into a container of malt.
Tsingtao Brewery Group, the world’s sixth-largest beer producer, confirmed the incident in the city of Pingdu in eastern Shandong province and assured that the affected shipment had been sealed and had not gone into production. It is still unclear whether the person urinating in public is an employee or an external employee.
According to local media, both the suspect and the author of the video recording are in custody. The urination incident is causing the company a lot of headaches. Numerous social media users expressed their disgust and announced that they would no longer drink Tsingtao beer.
The stock price collapses
The company’s stock price has also tumbled in recent days. There was a minus of one percentage point on Friday, and even 7.5 percentage points on Monday. The company stated that the quality of its product is taken very seriously and there is no reason for consumers to be concerned.
