Van der Bellen: – ‘Jewish friends must feel safe’

Date:

Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen has condemned the pulling down of the Israeli flags. ‘That has to stop. Our Jewish friends must feel safe,” he said on Tuesday. This is true all over the world and especially in Austria.

He said on Tuesday in the Ö1 “Mittagsjournal” that he hoped the young perpetrators did not know what they were doing. The flag is a symbol of Israel and Israel in turn is the refuge “in case everything goes wrong, so to speak” for Jews from all over the world. Apparently the Jewish institutions must be guarded day and night.

As reported, Israeli flags were recently torn from buildings in several Austrian cities, including the Vienna City Temple, the main synagogue in the federal capital (see video above). According to sociologist Kenan Güngör, these were not organized attacks. However, there are latently violent, aggressive young people from the Islamic Arab population.

“The willingness to use violence can target people”
“The willingness to use violence that is now directed against property could quickly spread to people,” Elie Rosen, president of the Jewish Community in Graz, warned on Tuesday. Due to the increasing attacks on Israeli symbols, many Jews no longer feel safe and avoid places such as the synagogue. Recently, slogans were shouted during meetings that at least indirectly deny Israel’s right to exist.
