Sweden is scheduled to officially become a member of NATO in November, after the end of the Turkish blockade. In a letter to current members of the defense alliance, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg mentioned a meeting of foreign ministers on November 28 and 29 as a target date. Several diplomats confirmed this in Brussels on Tuesday.
Sweden had originally hoped to join NATO in the summer of 2022. However, the country’s admission has so far been blocked by Turkey and Hungary. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Swedish politicians of a lack of action against “terrorist organizations” such as the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
After concessions from Sweden, Erdogan announced on Monday that he would have the so-called accession protocol ratified by the Turkish parliament.
Hungary also still has to agree
It was initially unclear when Parliament would vote on the Swedish proposal. Before the National Assembly can discuss it, it must pass the foreign policy committee. In addition, the Hungarian parliament must also approve Sweden’s accession.
Finland has been a member of NATO since April
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Sweden and Finland decided to apply for admission to NATO after a long period of military freedom from alliance. Finland was admitted to NATO as the 31st member on April 4 this year. Sweden becomes the 32nd member.
