Tesla, the world’s largest electric car maker, is closing its office in San Mateo, California, in a bid to cut costs. According to an insider, the approximately 200 employees who worked for the Autopilot driver assistance system have already been laid off.
A person familiar with the case told Reuters that it was mostly employees who were paid on an hourly basis. Tesla was not immediately available for comment.
Tesla boss Elon Musk had already informed internally at the beginning of June about the plans for job loss. In an email available to Reuters, he justified this with a “super bad feeling” about economic development.
Raj Rajkumar, an economics professor at Cornegie Mellon University, told the news channel that the layoffs indicated the second quarter was difficult for the market leader due to lockdowns in China, higher raw material costs and supply chain problems.
