In the port city of Mariupol, which has been heavily disputed for weeks, Ukrainian units are now running out of food and ammunition. A soldier complained on Facebook on Tuesday that no delivery had come to them in six weeks. A Briton who fought alongside Ukrainian marines tweeted that his unit had “no choice but to surrender”.
Aiden Aslin, 28, a former British nurse who moved to Ukraine in 2018 after falling in love with a woman from Mykolaiv, says in a video posted on Twitter that the armed forces ran out of supplies as the Russians advanced. When the invasion began, Aslin was stationed in the Donbass region, where pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces have been fighting since 2014, the Daily Mail reports.
“Always stay loyal to Ukraine”
A Ukrainian soldier, who introduced himself and his comrades as members of the 36th Marine Brigade from Mariupol, emphasized in a video posted on Facebook that he and the others would not surrender despite the difficult situation. “We have not left our positions and we will always remain loyal to (Ukraine).”
He then films through the windowless room where several of his comrades are sitting, also in military gear. “All Ukrainians should remember the price of this resistance. And put an end to the case. Fight to the end for the win!” says the bearded man with deep circles under his eyes. It is not clear where exactly the clip was taken.
Fighters barricade themselves in steel mills
Many of the Ukrainian fighters left behind in besieged Mariupol are apparently entrenched in the Azovstal steel mill. On Monday, Ukraine’s Supreme Commander Valeriy Zalushnyi confirmed that the connection with the Mariupol defenders had not been broken. He was responding to accusations by the Marines that there had been no contact with the Ukrainian military leadership for two weeks.
Did Russians Use Chemical Weapons?
On Monday, the Azov regiment of the Ukrainian army reported that Russian troops had used poison gas in Mariupol. To date, however, there has been no official confirmation of the messages. Britain had announced a review of the charges, but found no evidence of the use of chemical weapons.
