The “Night of Horror” must not remain without consequences. According to information from the “Krone”, the Halloween rioters in Linz are mainly young Syrians, Afghans and Chechens, many of them asylum seekers. Home Secretary Karner now says: Withdrawal proceedings would be launched without delay.
There were 130 reports and nine arrests on All Saints’ Day in the center of Linz. As reported, the riots – 200 youths rioted for hours, throwing fireworks and glass bottles at passers-by and police officers – were no coincidence either. Rather, it was a planned action. It was announced 19 hours in advance on TikTok.
The large-scale operation around Halloween night already led to debates in Upper Austria on Tuesday morning. Linz Mayor Klaus Luger (SPÖ) said there was “zero tolerance towards violent people” in Linz, “regardless of their motives”. Provincial governor Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) praised, among other things, “the courageous commitment” of the security forces. At the same time, he stressed the need to “tighten the penalties for attacks on police officers”.
Ruling FPÖ Upper Austria rumbles against federal ÖVP
The FPÖ Upper Austria, which rules the state together with the People’s Party, took advantage of the incident to criticize the federal ÖVP. “This is the visible bill for the failed and sleepy migration policies of Chancellor Nehammer and Home Secretary Karner,” said State Party Secretary Michael Gruber.
Interior Minister Karner (ÖVP) first stated in a press statement that he had ordered the director of the state police and the commander of the city police to convene a security summit with the mayor to “analyze the situation and draw the necessary conclusions”. Finally, to make it even more precise about the “Krone”: the security summit will be “convened immediately” and the deprivation procedure will be “started immediately”.
