Three ships carrying Ukrainian breakfast cereals departed despite Russian veto

The Kremlin assures it will “take action” against the UK for the attack on its fleet in Crimea and the sabotage of the Nord Stream

Ukraine, Turkey and the UN remain determined to continue exporting grain from Black Sea ports, despite Russia’s withdrawal from the agreement after its fleet was attacked in Crimea on Saturday. This Tuesday, three more ships loaded with grain sailed through the humanitarian corridor that made this possible, despite Moscow warning that continuing the pact without their participation could be “dangerous”.

“The relocation of these three ships was agreed by the delegations of Ukraine, Turkey and the UN. The Russian representation has been informed,” the head of the Joint Coordination Center (CCC), the body that monitors compliance with the agreement, based in Istanbul, told the AFP agency. The CCC also indicated that Despite the Russians’ withdrawal, 46 ships were inspected between Monday and Tuesday and may be allowed to cross the humanitarian corridor in either direction.

Since the implementation of the treaty last July, more than ten million tons of grain have left Ukrainian ports, an essential supply for alleviating food shortages in various parts of the world. The agreement expires on the 19th and would in principle be automatically extended. Now unblocking Russia leaves everything up in the air. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the main architect of the diplomatic success that the agreement marked, is doubling his efforts to avoid a total rift. This Tuesday he spoke with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, and was “confident” that Russia will return to the agreement.

The Kremlin, on the other hand, insisted on its accusations against the United Kingdom of “planning” the attack on its fleet, causing it to get out of the grain deal. Moscow also puts “British experts” behind the sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines. Its spokesman, Dimitri Peskov, stated that Moscow will consider the “measures to be taken” in retaliation and denounced the “unacceptable silence of European capitals” .

The abrupt events since Saturday have significantly heightened the tone of the statements. The latest example was that of former Russian President and current Vice President of the Security Council Dimitri Medvedev. “Let’s call things by their names. Western countries are pushing the world into a global war, and only Russia’s complete and final victory is a guarantee against global conflict,” he said on his Telegram channel.

On the other hand, Kiev is gradually returning to normalcy after a Russian bombing raid on Monday left 80% of the population without running water and 350,000 homes without electricity. According to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the Ukrainian capital has “completely” restored its basic stock.
