The Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment, Arantxa Tapia, has announced Euskadi’s candidacy for the creation of the future Spanish space agency.
As the minister emphasized in the press conference after the Governing Council, the candidacy was supported by the Basque government and this support will be included in the official presentation of the candidacy, for which the deadline is November 7.
“The Basque Country has an important aerospace industry and a scientific-tech ecosystem, making it ideal to house the headquarters of the new agency,” Tapia emphasized.
The Space Agency will cooperate with the European Space Agency (ESA) and will be responsible for coordinating various national organizations and unifying international cooperation. The activity is expected to start in 2023 and will have an initial budget of nearly €500 million in space programs.
The new agency’s general objectives will include the promotion, implementation and development of research; technological development and innovation in aerospace; security and defense; outfield operations; or satellite applications for the development of departmental skills, as well as the use of data provided by satellites.
