For several weeks, rumors have been circulating again about the possible use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine. According to a media report, senior members of the Russian military are said to have been so frustrated by the failure of the aggressive war that they have discussed a nuclear option. The US government is “concerned” about this.
As the “New York Times” reported Wednesday, citing unspecified US officials, Russian military officials are said to have discussed scenarios for the possible use of a tactical nuclear weapon in the war in Ukraine. Senior Russian military officials have discussed when and how Moscow could use a tactical nuclear weapon.
US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby also said on Wednesday that concerns have increased over the months. “We are monitoring it as closely as possible.”
Putin not involved?
Russian President Vladimir Putin was not involved in the discussions. And there is still no evidence that Moscow is actually taking steps in this direction, the officials said. The information that this had been discussed at a high level in the Russian military nevertheless raised concerns among the US government and other allies.
Intelligence about those talks was shared within the US government in mid-October, the report said. It shows how frustrated Russian generals are over military failure in Ukraine.
Russia’s foreign ministry said on Wednesday that preventing military conflict between nuclear powers must be a “top priority”. Nuclear powers must “give up dangerous efforts” to harm the main interests of other nuclear powers.
