In operation until 2033 – Polish government decides to build nuclear power plant

Date:

The Polish government has passed a resolution to build the country’s first nuclear power plants. A second nuclear power plant is also planned. Poland’s first nuclear reactor should go online in 2033.

The American group Westinghouse Electric Company has been awarded the contract for the first location, the PAP news agency reported on Wednesday after a cabinet meeting in Warsaw. The basis is a cooperation agreement between Washington and Warsaw on the civilian use of nuclear energy from 2020 onwards.

France had also shown interest in orders
Three AP 1000 pressurized water reactors are planned. A second nuclear power plant is also planned. “This is a project involving the construction of a nuclear power plant in Poland by a Korean company with the participation of Polish companies,” said National Conservative Prime Minister Mateus Morawiecki. There is no further information about a possible third project in central Poland. France had also expressed interest in the orders.

Poland’s first nuclear reactor should go online in 2033. In the 1980s, construction began on a Soviet-designed nuclear power plant near Gdansk. The Zarnowiec nuclear power plant was never completed after protests. Coal-fired power stations currently cover about 70 percent of Poland’s electricity needs.
