The outbuildings of the town of Klosterneuburg in ruins and ashes, the house of the Donausiedlung association destroyed, two firefighters with smoke poisoning, two burned-out vehicles, material damage probably in the six-figure range: that was the balance of the great nighttime fire in the historic Strombad in Kritzendorf.
The sirens sounded just before midnight on Tuesday. A city worker who lives nearby and was awakened by the fire had raised the alarm. A little later, a total of 120 Florianis with 23 vehicles were on site. For five hours they fought the flames, which reached a meter high into the sky.
“Last year we renovated our clubhouse. Financially, of course, it is crazy, but you should be glad that nothing more happened,” reports Claudia Vaca. She is not only president of the Donausiedlung Kritzendorf association, but also a member of the fire brigade. Because she is a resident herself, she was was one of the first to reach the site of the fire: “These are structures up to 100 years old made of very dry wood and the fire spread quickly,” she says.
Fortunately, emergency services were able to prevent it from spreading to adjacent residential buildings. However, the equipment of some silver helmets was robbed by the flames. The clubhouse was also temporarily used as a fire station while the reactivated branch of the local fire department is being renovated.
E-car was the cause of the fire
After “fire out” could be given, the fire investigators took over. The fire is believed to have started in a small, electrically powered pick-up truck from the municipality. The vehicle was parked there and connected to the electricity grid for charging. The battery may have caught fire.
