Across Europe, around 60 percent of respondents want to participate in the European Parliament elections within a month. That would be considerably more than in 2019, when turnout was 51 percent. The Bertelsmann Foundation survey was conducted among 13,300 citizens in all EU countries.
According to this report, six in ten respondents plan to vote. Another quarter said they “maybe” would vote. In turn, 15 percent do not plan to participate in the EU elections between June 6 and 9 (June 9 in Austria).
According to a Eupinions survey, the clear majority of respondents (75 percent) know Commission President Ursula von der Leyen after five years in office. This means that the politician is considerably better known than her predecessors. Dealing with the war in Ukraine and controlling the corona pandemic are cited as her greatest achievements.
Little insight into von der Leyen’s work
At the same time, seven in ten respondents said they did not feel sufficiently informed about the work of the President of the European Commission to assess her performance. The authors of the study speak of a “sharpened profile on the international stage”, but recommended reducing the knowledge gap and strengthening the Commission as a European executive. A direct election of citizens is also conceivable.
The Austrian EU top candidate and the top candidates are relatively less known, according to a Eurobarometer survey. The most famous was just under 50 percent.
At the beginning of June, more than 400 people can elect members of the new European Parliament (see video above).
