Screams of pain echoed through the funeral home of Ilsan Dongguk University Hospital on Nov. 1, three days after Seoul’s horrific Halloween stampede that left 154 dead (Krone reported). The parents, having traveled from Austria, said goodbye to their beloved with tears – the mother, completely devastated, hugged the coffin and did not want to let go.
The 24-year-old from Vienna, who holds Austrian-Korean dual citizenship, went to Seoul to study languages - so he could talk to his parents in Korean. K. should be back to Vienna next Monday.
Instead, he was now buried in Seoul. But he died a hero: “I’m so sorry he’s no longer with us because of me,” a grieving friend reproaches himself. “I fell, he saved me from the crowd – and gave his life for it.”
Halloween party turned into a disaster
The disaster struck Saturday night when there was a crowd during Halloween celebrations in a narrow alley in the busy nightlife area of Itaewon. Many people were crushed. 154 people were killed.
