Researchers discovered how donor liver stays fit

Date:

The Medical University of Innsbruck is investigating what determines the quality of donor organs. The latest findings are promising. The researchers have discovered an important property for a better transplant result.

With the help of so-called machine perfusion, organs outside the body can now function as they would in their natural environment and are therefore even better prepared for transplantation. The technology is already widely used in transplantation at the Innsbruck Clinic. Innsbruck is one of the leading centers in Europe.

Cellular respiration of 50 potential donor livers examined
Researchers have now made a promising discovery here. Andras Meszaros and Julia Hofmann examined the cellular respiration of 50 potential donor livers and then measured how the patients were doing with the organ. It turned out that the better the cell respiration of a donor liver, the better the prognosis after the transplant. The organ is therefore fitter and functions better after the transplant.

With this, the doctors see the usefulness of machine perfusion again as confirmation. Because the use of this technology has a positive effect on maintaining the cellular respiration of an organ. In Innsbruck, 150 donor livers have already been examined and prepared for transplantation by machine perfusion.
