The five richest people in the Basque Country amass a fortune of 5,900 million euros, although more than half of that money (3,100 million) belongs to the Switzerland-based donostiarra Daniel Matea shareholder of the British-Swiss multinational mining company Glencore.

According to the Forbes list published this Thursday, Maté’s fortunes had been diminished for two years by the stock market decline, but in 2022 Glencore’s price rebounded, surpassing the price of its 2011 debut for the first time.

Thanks to this, Maté’s net worth has increased by 900 million in the past year to 3,100, from tenth place on the Forbes Spain list in 2021 to sixth place in 2022.

The second richest Basque is the steel businessman of Gipuzkoan Jose Maria Aristotraina “major” shareholder of ArcelorMittal and a “prominent” shareholder of Tubacex, with assets of 1.1 billion, 150 more than last year.

His fortune comes from Aceralia, which took over the Aristrain family business and he retained 11% of the shares. It was later integrated into ArcelorMittal.

The third Basque on the Forbes list is Juan Luis Arreguia resident of Mallabia (Bizkaia), which is ranked 36th state level with a fortune of 750 million, 100 more than last year.

Arregui is the president and majority shareholder of the energy and cellulosic company Ence and is also a shareholder of Iberdrola with 0.57% of the shares. Ence’s share price lost more than half of its value between 2018 and 2021, but recovered in 2022 with a 35% increase.

Victor de UrrutiaBorn in Madrid but of Basque descent, is next on the list: he has the third largest fortune in the Basque Country and the 43rd in Spain with 650 million euros, an amount that has not changed in the past year.

In addition to being a “relevant investor” through Asua Inversiones, it is the majority shareholder of the Riojan winery Compañía Vinícola del Norte (CVNE) and of the 2009 Profitability SICAV.

At the 98th position at the state level and as the fifth largest wealth in the Basque Country carmen ybarra with 300 million euros, 25 million less than in the previous Forbes list.

It owns the holding company Onchena, with which it has shares in Vocento, Atrys, Ecoener, Reig and Solarpack, among others. If the portion attributed to his family is added, the total wealth comes to 600 million, although a portion corresponds to the Adey Foundation.
