If the city fathers have their way, this year will be a quiet New Year’s Eve in Linz. The party has been canceled – but according to city boss Klaus Luger (SPÖ), not because of the Halloween riot.
For the third time in a row there will be no official New Year’s Eve celebration in Linz – that has been the case for the past two years because of Corona. Even before the night of the riots, it was decided to cancel it again this year. The decision was made because people would still avoid large crowds.
The private organizer decided not to let the event go ahead this year due to the risk that could have been posed by corona waves, a broadcast said. In the coming year it could be “as it used to be” again.
“But all the other events, like the New Year’s Eve run, take place,” Mayor Klaus Luger said, stressing, “We would never bow to violent criminals and allow our traditions to be taken from us.”
