Are glasses only for nerds? You would think so with the emojis. That’s why a student wants to use the #GlassesOn initiative to ensure that glasses can be added to all emojis. The young Brit thinks this would also boost the confidence of spectacle wearers.
“I wrote a letter to Google and Meta because I would also like other glasses emojis. You can already choose a skin and hair color, that’s great. We are only asking for a small change, but it makes a big difference to many people,” said Lowri Moore from Chilwell, Nottinghamshire, England, who is behind the #GlassesOn initiative.
When she was nine, she also wanted to see cartoon characters wear glasses like her, so she wrote a letter to Disney. And her dream came true last year with the character Mirabel Madrigal (with glasses) in the animated and musical film “Encanto”.
Moore is now convinced that new emojis can give glasses wearers more confidence. “You probably know that people wearing glasses are not nerds. If we make that a problem, there is a chance for the next generation not to grow up with that lie. You have the power to help us because you are a member of the Unicode Consortium, which is why I am writing to you and asking for your help.”
After all, the nerd emoji isn’t particularly likable to many, according to Moore.
