The American Minister of Defense Lloyd Austin says he is convinced that Ukrainians can recapture areas on the west side of the Dnipro River and around the city of Kherson that are still being held by Russian troops. “I think they’re capable of that,” Austin said Thursday in Washington. “The main thing is that Ukrainians themselves believe that they can do it,” he added.
According to Western security circles, Russia is preparing to withdraw its troops from Kherson. The Russians may have decided that “the city was not worth the fight,” said a high Western government official on Thursday in a background briefing to journalists. However, it is always possible that military leadership will change ideas in the short term, even if everything currently points to a withdrawal, he said.
Central role in arms deliveries
The US play a central role in providing weapons and other help to Ukraine in defense against the Russian attack war, which has been going on since February.
Kherson, located on the right bank of the Dnipro River, was captured by Russia at the beginning of the war of aggression. In late September, Kremlin Chief Vladimir Putin officially annexed Kherson as one of four Ukrainian regions for Russia.
Ukraine has systematically destroyed the food routes
At the same time, the situation of the Russian troops west of the river has deteriorated significantly. The Ukrainian troops systematically destroyed the Russian delivery routes over the DNIPRO and went further to the city in their counter-offensive at the beginning of October.
