More pressure demanded – Selenskyj doubts Europe’s determination

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed doubts about Europe’s determination to step up pressure on Russia for his country’s war crimes. “Some EU countries cannot decide when they will at least noticeably limit the purchase of Russian energy resources,” the head of state said in a speech to the Lithuanian parliament on Tuesday.

The war in Ukraine started by Russia raises a strategic question for Europe. “Are the values that became the foundation of Europe after the Second World War still alive? Or have the values already played their part and can they only serve as exhibitions in museums for tourists?” says Zelenskyj.

Earlier, Zelenskyy urged the European Union to impose sanctions on all banks and the oil industry in Russia. The EU must set a deadline for stopping gas imports. “Only then will the Russian government understand that it must strive for peace.” If there is still no clarity about a gas embargo, then no one can be sure that there is a will to end Russia’s war crimes.

Selenskyj complains about kidnapping
Russia launched a war of aggression against Ukraine on February 24. In his speech, Zelenskyy accused Russian troops of kidnapping hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians to Russia in order to silence them about the war crimes committed by Russian soldiers. “They will be taken to special camps. Their documents are taken from them, they are interrogated and humiliated. It is unknown how many they kill,” the Ukrainian president said. There had been similar accusations from the Ukrainian side before. So far, there is no evidence for these allegations.
