Peaceful demo – Kindberger protested against planned asylum seekers home

Date:

The planned asylum seekers center for 250 refugees in the former nursing home continues to heat up emotions in Kindberg. Clear signals were sent to Vienna with a demonstration in the pouring rain on Friday.

“Kindberg must not become Linz.” This slogan was on one of the signs held up by protesters on Friday during a protest march through the Mürztal community.

fears among the population
It is an allusion to the riots a few days ago in the capital of Upper Austria, which also involved asylum seekers. Many Kindbergers are afraid of similar circumstances. Because the former state care center has to serve as a home for about 250 asylum seekers from January.

“The majority of the Kindbergers are against this institution,” mayor Christian Sander (SPÖ) told the “Steirerkrone”. “We are a pawn of the government because a building here stood empty.”

Silent march instead of living billboard street
All four city council parties organized the demonstration together on Friday. More than a hundred protesters – including from neighboring communities – came.

The original plan for a ‘living billboard street’ from town hall to the property, ten minutes’ walk away, was dropped by the rain. Instead, a silent march was launched – with significantly more umbrellas than soggy posters.

Messages of all degrees of severity
The few banners carried slogans of all degrees of seriousness, from “Ask civilians instead of running over them” to “We don’t need shelters for rapists, strikers and rioters”.

Speeches were withheld in advance, but the protesters still debated. “I have worked in Traiskirchen for a long time and I know what Kindberg is doing now. That is why I am participating in a demonstration for the first time at the age of 73,” explains a pensioner.
