Advent time – sea of light is on the back burner this year

Date:

The Christmas lights in the old town save energy: they sparkle ten days later than usual – and the daily switch-on time of the LED lights is shortened by eight hours.

The whole country has had to cut spending because of the energy crisis, even the Christmas lights in Klagenfurt are only glistening on the back burner this year. In previous years, the sea of lights shone from November 9, this time it is only turned on in the Old Town at the start of the Christmas market on November 19. The daily lighting switch-on time has been reduced from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. (previously to 11 p.m.).

City not continuously lit
On the four shopping days, the light is only on from 4 to 10 p.m., previously from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. That’s eight hours less. Candles and lanterns are used instead of electric Christmas lights, only decorations with LED lights are fitted. “On January 1, the magic of Christmas will come to an end again,” explains city administrator Christian Scheider. “In addition, many lamps are only operated with economy versions.”

But the city must shine, because many guests mainly come to Klagenfurt for its sea of lights. The Christmas market already has it from November 19: 70 market stalls await visitors from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., more than 80 events such as the Advent wreath-binding take place. The guests are entertained until 23:00.
