More and more affected people are turning to wire counseling because of their experiences with violence. Consultations on this topic increased by 16.42 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year. The eight callers who experience violence every day are predominantly 11 to 14 years old.
The number of children affected by violence is increasing rapidly. And more and more of them are turning with their fears, concerns and problems to the organization Rat auf Draht, the emergency number for children and young people.
The number of counseling sessions about experiences of violence increased by 16.42 percent to 2,935 in 2022 compared to the previous year, the organization reported on Thursday. There were 2,176 calls in the first three quarters of this year, indicating a similarly high level for 2023.
On average, eight callers report violence every day. “The most common problem is bullying and psychological violence at school, followed by psychological and physical violence in the family,” says Birgit Satke, head of Rat auf Draht’s emergency number 147. 11- to 14-year-olds are particularly affected, followed by 15-year-olds to 18 year olds.
Also sexual violence
Bullying in particular has increased significantly, even by five percent compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019 (as of 2022).
Sexual violence, such as cyber grooming, extortion and sexual harassment online, is also becoming increasingly common. The number of reports about sextortion, which involves blackmailing with nude photos on the internet, on the emergency number 147 increased by about 39 percent in the first half of 2023 compared to the second half of 2022.
“It is important to raise children to be confident and independent individuals and to inform them about their rights,” advises Satke.
