After the two Nord Stream pipelines were blown up last year and more recent reports of damaged pipelines and undersea cables, the British government now wants to protect critical infrastructure in the English Channel and the Baltic Sea with warships.
As the Ministry of Defense announced in London on Thursday, two frigates, patrol boats, mine countermeasures ships and a landing ship will be deployed from December. They are supported by a P-8 Poseidon maritime reconnaissance and submarine fighter aircraft.
According to a statement, British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps sent a strong signal of deterrence: “we are prepared to meet any potential threat with force.”
Nord Stream saboteurs fled to Ukraine
Since the destruction of the Nord Stream gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea in September 2022, there have been concerns that Russia in particular could damage critical infrastructure of NATO members. International investigators have not yet identified a guilty party in the Nord Stream case.
After extensive research, “Der Spiegel” and ZDF recently reported that the saboteurs’ tracks led to Ukraine. The country has always been against the pipelines. However, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi denied Kiev’s involvement in the attack.
