There are currently more and more fake text messages in circulation, which allegedly come from the Austrian tax authorities such as FinanzOnline. Recipients must open a link and enter personal information there.
The Ministry of Finance announced this in a press release on Friday. “The hyperlinks contained therein lead to fake websites in the style of FinanzOnline, which ask you to enter personal details, especially account details.” It concerns “an attempted internet fraud.” For example, tax returns or other applications can be completed.
This is what one of these messages might look like.
Ministry of Finance does not send SMS
According to its own statement, the Ministry of Finance (BMF) does not send text or email messages. “Information from the BMF is generally provided in the form of notices and is delivered by post or in the FinanzOnline Databox.” Furthermore, BMF employees would never ask citizens to submit personal information such as passwords, credit card information or account information.
The BMF recommends that you do not follow the instructions in such messages (i.e. do not open any links or files) and delete them immediately.
